Treasury

The Church Heritage Museum was opened in 2009 in St Michael‘s Church – a mausoleum of the Sapieha family and beautiful example of Renaissance and early Baroque architecture. It is the only place where you can see the Treasury of Vilnius Cathedral, which was hidden away in the wall of the Cathedral for almost half a century, the earliest masterpieces of Lithuanian goldsmiths and textile artists.

The museum‘s exhibition presents liturgical artefacts from different churches of the Archdiocese of Vilnius. This collection of sacral art is supplemented by temporal exhibitions. Each visitor is entitled to a free audio guide in Lithuanian, English and German. The audio guide offers detailed information about the museum’s exhibits, the Treasury of Vilnius Cathedral, the history of St Michael’s Church and its endower, Leo Sapieha.

Films shown on tablet PCs will tell you the history of the treasury, explain the meanings of liturgical artefacts, take you on a virtual tour of the mausoleum crypts and the Bernardine convent, and invite you to play games, guess riddles, and tell stories.
